Phoenixville Public Library will host a decoupage class for adults on Thursday, Sept. 7, at 6:45 PM. Craft instructor Laura Grablutz will lead participants in making a decoupaged vase/candle holder. No painting or artistic skills needed! If you have some favorite tissue paper, bring it along, or pick from a selection that will be available at the workshop. Materials fee is $10.00, payable at the door with cash, PayPal or Venmo. The event is open to the public. Space is limited. Phoenixville Public Library will host the AARP Smart Driver 8-Hour Class over two days, Thursday, Sept. 7, and Friday, Sept. 8, from 12:45 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. each day. The course offers participants an opportunity to learn how to drive more efficiently and safely. The course contains up-to-date information about changes in ourselves, our vehicles and our roads. Participants may qualify to receive a discount on their auto insurance. Please check with your insurance company. Cost is $20.00 for AARP members, and $25.00 for non-members, payable by check or money order at class time. Phoenixville Public Library will host Ivan Stiles, a member of the Autoharp Hall of Fame, in concert on Monday, Sept. 11, at 6:45 p.m. Ivan Stiles brings a unique blend of traditional to contemporary music in the folk tradition to his audiences. Old-time favorites, traditional ballads, and original songs are skillfully interpreted on the autoharp. This event is free and open to the public. The Phoenix Book Club, Phoenixville Public Library’s virtual book discussion group for adults of all ages, will meet on Zoom on Monday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m. The group will discuss Colson Whitehead’s bestselling novel, “Harlem Shuffle.” Ray Carney is an upstanding salesman of reasonably-priced furniture, married, second child on the way, living in a cramped apartment across from the railroad tracks. And — Ray Carney descends from uptown hoods and crooks, so — money tight–his cousin occasionally drops off some jewelry of questionable origins. It doesn’t stop there — now the “crew” wants to pull off a major heist. Can Ray avoid getting killed, save his cousin, and grab his share of the big score — and retain his rep? Movies on Tap, Phoenixville Public Library’s virtual film discussion group for adults in their 20s and 30s, will meet on Zoom on Tuesday, Sept. 12, at 7:30 p.m.. The group will discuss “Casablanca” (1942, PG). Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman & Paul Henreid star in this classic, Oscar-winning romantic drama about a cynical expatriate American cafe owner who struggles to decide whether or not to help his former lover and her fugitive husband escape the Nazis in French Morocco. Please watch the film independently prior to the discussion. This event is free and open to the public and will be held online via Zoom. Phoenixville Public Library will host a new, in-person writer’s support group, Words in Progress, beginning Saturday, Sept. 16, from 1 to 3 PM. Patricia Conroy will be the moderator. A writer’s support group can bring your skills to the next level. The group will gather together once a month to share writing, with an opportunity to receive gentle, constructive feedback, all in a supportive, joyful environment. All genres and all writing levels welcome. Beginners are especially encouraged to join.
